The Sioux Falls Storm suffered its second loss straight loss on the young season Friday night in Moline, Illinois to the Quad City Steamwheelers 34-24.
The Storm (2-2) battled back from an 11-point deficit in the first half to take its first lead of the game at 24-20 on the first play of the third quarter. Daniel Smith threw a 30-yard pass to Carlos Thompson to give the visiting team the four-point advantage.
After that homerun play to kick off the half, the Steamwheelers (2-2) would go on to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a three-yard rushing touchdown with 1:14 in the game to seal the deal for the home team, winning by a 10-point margin.
Taz Wilson started the game for Sioux Falls and completed a seven-yard completion to Tim Keith to get them on the board in the first quarter. After a failed extra point from Sawyer Petre, they trailed 7-6 early.
On their next possession, Wilson fumbled the ball at the home 21-yard line, which set up Quad City for a 42-yard field goal attempt. Daniel Smith would be put in at quarterback for the rest of the game after that possession. He compiled 101 passing yards on 7-of-17 completions. Smith had two passing touchdowns and nine rush yards.
Running back Nate Chavious did not find the endzone in the game, finishing the game with 67 rush yards on 13 attempts. Aaron Aiken struggled for Quad City in the passing game, putting up 48 yards with six completions on 15 pass attempts. However, Aiken found success on the ground, rushing 14 times for 70 rush yards and a rushing touchdown.
Paris Taylor paced the Storm on the defensive side of the ball as he had six total tackles, four of them being solo and two assisted. Mike Alvarez and Marquis Hendrix had five tackles apiece.
The Storm will get another shot at Quad City May 28 in the last game of their three-game series in the regular season. They will be back on the road next week as they are set to play the Iowa Barnstormers Saturday, April 16 at 7:05 p.m. in Des Moines, Iowa.
Sioux Falls fell to Iowa in their first meeting March 28 at home in a 14-point loss, 45-31. The Storm play Iowa four total times this season, with the other two games taking place at home April 29 and on the road June 4.
