Week 5 IFL Players of the Week Announced

Carlton Watkins Player of the WeekQB Dowdell, DB Asprilla and DB Watkins Honored

The Indoor Football League (IFL) is proud to announce the Vidswap.com Players of the Week for Week 5 of the 2017 IFL season.

Offensive Player of the Week: Charles Dowdell (QB, Spokane Empire)

After a sluggish start on offense to begin the season, the Spokane Empire erupted for 70 points in a Week 5 victory over the Colorado Crush. During the game, ten of the Empire's twelve offensive drives resulted in touchdowns. QB Charles Dowdell (6'0, 210, Saginaw Valley State), a 2016 Second Team All-IFL selection, led the charge by completing 17 of 23 passes for 200 yards and seven touchdowns. Dowdell ranks among the league leaders with 614 passing yards (4th) and 16 passing touchdowns (2nd). Through four games, the Empire sit atop the Intense Conference Standings with a 3-1 record. Next up, the Empire will host the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles (1-2) on Friday night in a Week 6 conference matchup.

Defensive Player of the Week: Manny Asprilla (DB, Green Bay Blizzard)

In one of the most entertaining games of the young 2017 IFL season, the Green Bay Blizzard defeated the Cedar Rapids Titans in spectacular fashion, 34-28. Tied with one minute remaining in the contest, the Titans offense was driving for the winning score. Blizzard DB Manny Asprilla (5'10, 185, Boston College) had other plans. Asprilla stepped in front of a Brion Carnes throw, intercepted the pass, and raced 38-yards down the field for the game-winning touchdown. He also registered seven tackles and two pass breakups during the game. The interception was Asprilla's fourth of the season, tying him for the league lead. He also leads the league with two interception returns for touchdowns. The Blizzard (2-2) return home in Week 6 to take on the Arizona Rattlers (1-2) on Sunday afternoon.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Carlton Watkins (DB, Sioux Falls Storm)

The Sioux Falls Storm improved to 4-0 with a dominating 70-13 victory over the Iowa Barnstormers (2-2). The Storm were firing on all cylinders on Monday night and extended their unprecedented home win streak to 64 games. DB Carlton Watkins (5'10, 190, Tiffin) was a standout performer on the Storm's special teams. Watkins tallied four tackles on the kickoff unit, twice downing Iowa returners inside the10-yard line. He also registered a rare Rouge, scoring one point for the Storm by tackling the opposing team returner before they advance the ball out of the end zone. For the entire game, Watkins accounted for nine tackles and a pass break up. The Storm return to action in Week 6 hosting the Wichita Falls Nighthawks (4-0) on Saturday night. The highly anticipated game features the final two undefeated teams in the IFL.
