SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls Storm traveled to Des Moines, IA to play in their ninth consecutive championship appearance. The showdown plotted the Sioux Falls Storm against the Iowa Barnstormers in the 2018 United Bowl Championship game on Saturday, July 7th. The Storm would fall short in recapturing the United Bowl trophy after a 42-38 loss to the Barnstormers.
The first quarter saw only one touchdown coming off a Iowa six-yard touchdown pass by Drew Powell to BJ Butler, putting the Barnstormers up 7-0.
The second quarter was a back and forth bout with Sioux Falls striking first to tie the game when Lorenzo Brown took in a 11-yard rushing touchdown. Iowa would retake a 14-7 lead after Drew Powell found Ryan Ballentine for a 42-yard touchdown. Sioux Falls would tie it up again after a two-yard touchdown pass by Lorenzo Brown to Damond Powell. Iowa would go on top 21-14 after a Drew Powell 23-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Ballentine. Sioux Falls would end the half with a 21-17 deficit after a 28-yard field goal by Miles Bergner.
The Storm would take their first lead of the game to begin the third quarter after a one-yard rushing touchdown by Lorenzo Brown. The Barnstormers would be back on top 28-24 after a three-yard rushing touchdown by Drew Powell. The Storm would end the third quarter with a 31-28 lead after a 11-yard rushing touchdown by Lorenzo Brown.
The Barnstormers would score first in fourth quarter and retake a 35-31 lead after a four-yard touchdown pass by Drew Powell to Ryan Ballentine. The Storm answered with a three-yard rushing touchdown by Lorenzo Brown, putting the Storm on top 38-35. The Barnstormers would score with 13 seconds left in the game to bring the score to 42-38 after a eight-yard rushing touchdown by Jamal Tyler. The Storm would have a chance to score when Lorenzo Brown found Judd Harrold in the end zone but the pass would be incomplete after a Barnstormers fan knocked the ball loose.
Storm quarterback Lorenzo Brown completed 15 out of his 24 attempts while throwing for 134 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Brown also had 84 rushing yards for four touchdowns. Wide receivers Damian Ford had 59 reception yards and Damond Powell had 40 reception yards and one touchdown. Kicker Miles Bergner was perfect on
the night after hitting one field goal and 5 extra points. Defensive back Jabari Gorman led the Thunder Defense in tackles with eight while defensive back Lorenzo White had one sack. Defensive lineman Chad Stoterau had one tackle for loss.
The Sioux Falls Storm finished the 2018 season with a record of 12-4 and were crowned the Intense Conference Champions.
