Avera Sports Institute (ASI)

Avera Sports Institute logoThe Avera Sports Institute will serve as the official home to Avera McKennan's world-class performance enhancement program, Avera McKennan Acceleration. ASI will also become the training headquarters for Dakota Gold Soccer, the Sioux Empire Baseball Association (SEBA), Todd Kolb Golf Academy, the Nate Tibbetts Instructional BasketBall School (TIBBS) and the Sioux Falls Storm. Additionally, the Orthopedic Institute will lease space in the facility.


The Avera Sports Institute features:

  • 60 meter Mondo® surface sprint track
  • 60 yard x 40 yard MondoTurf® playing surface for soccer, football, baseball, softball and golf
  • 10,000 square foot speed, strength and conditioning area (Avera McKennan Acceleration)
  • Classroom space for conferences, team meetings, etc.
  • Athletic training services (provided by the certified athletic training staff of the Orthopedic Institute)
  • Locker and shower facilities
  • General fitness facilities

Avera Sports Institute weightroom area Avera McKennan Acceleration is the only sports training program in Sioux Falls that has trained or currently athletes from the NFL, NBA and MLB. Some of these professional athletes include All-Pro Kyle Vanden Bosch of the Tennessee Titans, Kevin Kaesviharn of the Cincinnati Bengals and Josh Ranek, former South Dakota State University star and now a member of the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League.


Sioux Falls Storm practicing at the Avera Sports InstituteAvera McKennan Acceleration is a member of the Frappier Acceleration Sports Training program - the world's largest single network of sports training facilities, with 155 facilities across the globe.


The Sioux Falls-based Acceleration trains more than 800 local and regional athletes each year. Several professional sports athletes have used the program.


Avera Sports Institute is the host of the Sioux Falls Storm practicesFrappier Acceleration Sports Training focuses on increasing maximum sprint speed, vertical jump and anaerobic conditioning - the physiological constructs that govern the speed and power sports such as football, volleyball, basketball, hockey, baseball, softball, wrestling, track and field, and soccer. The program is based on scientific research and the tenets of exercise physiology, not simply strength training.


The Sioux Falls Storm linemen practice at the Avera Sports InstituteAlready known throughout the region for their sports medicine expertise, the athletic trainers and orthopedic physicians from Orthopedic Institute recently collaborated with Avera McKennan physical therapists and exercise physiologists to produce the revolutionary "Return to Sport" program, a multi-faceted approach designed to get the injured athlete back to competing faster than ever.


The Sioux Falls Storm receivers practice at the Avera Sports InstituteThe OI sports medicine team has more than 75 years of sports medicine experience and its physicians have performed thousands of ACL surgeries, one of the most common sports injuries. In addition, the OI sports medicine team provides coverage for over 30 area high schools, numerous local college athletic programs and they serve as team physicians and sports medicine providers for the Sioux Falls Storm football team.
