Kurtiss Riggs is entering his 15th season as head coach of the Sioux Falls Storm. Under his leadership, the Storm have won ten League Championships, including consecutive titles from 2005-2008 and most recently, 2011-2016 seasons. With Coach Riggs at the helm, the Storm achieved the longest winning streak of any professional sports team with 40 consecutive wins and compiled a career record of 216-36.
During his tenure with the team, Riggs has been named Coach of the Year four times – 2004 of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL), consecutively, in 2006-2007 of the United Indoor Football (UIF) and in 2015 of the Indoor Football League (IFL). In addition, Kurtiss led the Storm to back-to-back undefeated seasons in 2006 & 2007.
Riggs began his professional football career as a player with the Sioux Falls Cobras in 2000 and continued playing for the Storm in 2001. He began his coaching duties in 2002 as the offensive coordinator before taking over in 2003 as the head coach.
Kurtiss is a 1997 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls. He earned All-American honors after leading the Cougars to the NAIA National Championship and was named National Player-of-the-Year in 1996. As a player, Riggs set numerous conference and national passing records, including 55 touchdown passes in one season, and had the most pass attempts without an Interception at any level with 290 attempts. Kurtiss is currently ranked second all-time on USF's career passing list. He went on to play professionally in Europe and in numerous indoor leagues after college.
After returning from Europe, Riggs began his coaching career at Roosevelt High School, in Sioux Falls in 1998. Riggs eventually returned to USF to coach quarterback from 2005-2009. While at USF, two of Riggs' quarterbacks were named National Players of the Year, the team compiled a record of 69-3, and the Cougars won three National Championships. Riggs was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame and the University of Sioux Falls Hall of Fame in 2013 for his collegiate accomplishments.
Away from coaching, Riggs is the owner/director of POWER Riggs Premier Football Academy, which operates at the Sanford Fieldhouse. Kurtiss and his wife, Leisa, live in Sioux Falls year-round with their two children, Peyton and Afton.
